The Discovery Center in the Dalles is the place to go to learn and experience the Lewis and Clark expedition and other Columbia River history including the repeated ice age Missoula and Montana Ice Field floods from ice damn breaks that shaped the gorge. Maryhill Museum is the huge stone manor and amazing collections and works of the quirky and brilliant industrial giant Sam Hill; he built if for his wife, heiress of a monied Minnesota family, but she hated it never moving in. He master minded and built the nation's first paved western highway, with breathtaking views, a miriad of waterfalls, and heart stopping cliff face roadways, as a show case envisioning the way of the future. He was an avid yet eccentric and eclectic collector and he liked Slavic queens, chess sets, icon art, and built a life size Stone Hedge to honor WWI soldiers. He was an American original and built this country along with the likes of JP Morgan and the Rockefellers. A local must see.
